total kaputt (totally fucked up) discusses the question, which
relevance the term of the destruction has in contemporary visual
art. By destruction usually a negative attitude is understood,
which does not only question existing structures: through a
process of fragmentation and deconstruction of structures,
destruction becomes a self-purpose, without initiating new
approaches for the development of positive utopias and
concepts, that could be regarded as a structural contribution.
Driven by a continued commercialization, subcultural values are transferred
into the mainstream. The originally existing creative value of destruction
is unreservedly incorporated and becomes, on the background of an exponentially
growing public a carelessly reflected part of transformed normative systems.
Without regarding the original, sense-giving context, destruction is turned into
a fashion. And once it is presented to the broad media public, criticism fades
away. This, as I call it, before-afterwards relation is ironically reimported
into the subculture and countered by it, so that the question about the effect
of integrated destructive patterns arises, always again. This aspect can be
seen in the exhibition total kaputt. The eight invited artists present at
ABEL their view on the „Steal in" of different forms of destructiveness
into the normative codes of our environment.
